The Museum of the Fur Trade, located on U.S. Highway 20, 3 miles east of Chadron, is a famous attraction built on the site of an old trading post. It was operated by James Bordeaux beginning in 1840 and continued until 1876, although he apparently left in 1872. Many well-known trappers and travelers of the era visited this trading post, and the post is mentioned in their writings. The museum is recorded in the National Register of Historic Places. For more information, contact the Museum of the Fur Trade at (308) 432-3843. Within a 100-mile area surrounding Chadron are many more world-famous tourist attractions. They include Scottsbluff National Monument, the Wildcat Hills, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Toadstool Geologic Park, and Hudson-Meng Bison Kill Site. South Dakota attractions include Evans Plunge at Hot Springs, the scenic Black Hills, Mount Rushmore National Monument, Crazy Horse Monument, Mount Coolidge Observatory, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, and the Custer State Park and Wildlife Refuge, which is inhabited with deer, elk, burros, black-tailed prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, buffalo herds, and other wildlife species.
