Brenda Johnson, along with Sandra Powell and Melany Hughes, attended the Heartland Basic Economic Development training course in Missouri.

Dear Members:

Wow! Is it just me or has anyone else noticed all the positive publicity regarding Nebraska Northwest Development Corporation in the news lately? We have had a lot of things going on the last few months.

In April, I graduated from the Heartland Economic Development Training Course, along with Sandra Powell and Melany Hughes. This course is accredited by the International Economic Development Council and is designed to meet the increasing need for professional education in the field of economic development. I studied topics to include business retention and expansion, strategic planning, workforce development, community immigration, real estate development and reuse, marketing your community, financing, entrepreneurship, business attraction, and web presence.

During the web presence section of the Heartland Economic Development Training Course, each participant’s website who attended was evaluated. Both the City of Chadron and NNDC were recognized as having two of the best websites out of eighty-five reviewed. Tom Jacobs, past intern for the City of Chadron, built both websites. Thank you, Tom.

Publicity has also come from the Dawes County Community Survey. The survey received 359 responses. There was a good mixture of respondents in relation to sex, location, age, education, and income. The survey received a large amount of attention from all local media sources including the Scottsbluff Star-Herald and KCSR. We are in the process of analyzing the information received and will release a report in the next couple of weeks. Copies will be available at our office. If you are interested, give us a call and we will be happy to mail it to you.

NNDC is proud to announce that we have partnered with Moody Dental to help with their expansion.   Dr. Moody continued his education and will now be doing implant work. Patients travel from a large area to visit the dental clinic, which should boost Crawford’s economy. People coming to see the Dentist will also be supporting other businesses, such as restaurants, gas stations, and Ft. Robinson, all of which help the Dawes County tax base. Congratulations to Moody Dental.

Taco John’s new building will be complete in about two weeks. We have had the opportunity to visit with Don and Dorothy Berg who have invited us to tour their establishment. They have worked hard to “go green” and will be using modern technology in heating, air conditioning, and building structure as they finish the construction. One of the new changes is that they will be serving breakfast.

NNDC hosted a luncheon for the realtors in our area stressing the importance of working together. When we are contacted by a possible new business they give us very little information, initially. We generally don’t know the company because we are contacted by a site consultant or an attorney. Often we only know the size of building they are looking for. By working with the realtors, we can respond to the consultant, or attorney, with the requested information within 24 hours. In most cases, if the consultant/attorney has not gotten the information within that time frame, we are no longer considered for the project. NNDC saw this as a weakness and we are working to resolve this issue.

Enclosed is a list of services that we offer and the organizations that we partner with. It was brought to our attention that a lot of people don’t realize what we have to offer. If we can help you in any way, please let us know.

Also, enclosed is a sheet for you to update your contact information. It is important to us so we can continue to send you up-dates and invitations as events happen. Feel free to e-mail, fax, or call us regarding the updates.

As we watch the fluctuating economy, it is vital that we support our own community. Come visit the Chadron Chamber of Commerce to rediscover how Dawes County can entertain you and your family.

Best regards,

Brenda Johnson
